Apart from the skin being a cover for the body , it has so many properties. Below are some amazing skin facts:
Just like the stomach or kidney, the skin is also an organ. The largest one at that. It is part of the integumentary system, it weighs about 5 KG in an average person. This accounts for about 16% of the Total body weight.
These are Epidermis, Dermis and Hypodermis. The Epidermis (which is the outermost layer) is what we see. The dermis contains the sweat glands, hair, nerve endings etc. The hypodermis houses fat and blood vessels.
The skin is a medium by which fluid loss is prevented , therefore it stores water. It also gets rid of waste in the form of sweat (sweating is a means of regulating the body temperature) . There are 2 main types of sweat glands – Apocrine sweat gland (which has a little bit of fatty and protein substances) is found in the Underarms and Genital areas while the Eccrine (contains mainly salt and water) is found all over the body. The sweat glands mainly function in regulating the body temperature . The other skin glands are sebaceous glands, which secrete an oily substance called sebum that keep hair moist, they are found everywhere except the soles and palms. The ceruminous glands produce earwax and the Mammary glands secrete milk.
Under the microscope, there are five layers of the epidermis, the topmost layer (stratum corneum) sheds almost every 28 days. In other words, the skin has a self-renewal process.
Almost Every part of the body has a certain group of microorganisms which contribute to the natural environment of the respective area . On an average healthy person, they are quite harmless.
these are just some few awesome skin facts
